Growing up in the United Kingdom, I always celebrated Mother's Day every year with my family. As an only child, Mother's Day was also very important as I had the sole responsibility of making my mum's Mother's Day a good one. So, I would buy my mum a gift, make her a card, get flowers, and usually help my Dad cook her a nice meal. Most Mother's Days for us in the UK though were different than those celebrated in the US, and much of this probably stems from the origins of the United Kingdom's Mother's Day celebrations.
In the UK, Mother's Day began as a day that was more of a religious day than a day to specifically celebrate mothers. It began when many members of the family were working away from home and, on Sundays, they would go to whichever church was near to them. But, one day a year, Mother's Day, most family members would return to their home parish and go to their church, which was often known as the 'mother church'. Along with this, children both small and grown, would pick wildflowers for their mothers and that's how Mother's Day in the UK was born.
Nowadays, Mother's Day in the UK is similar to the US but more low-key. The British usually don't send as many greetings cards and don't spend as much money on gifts. They are also not as religious as they used to be, so most of them are not likely to go to church either. They do however still celebrate Mother's Day in a serious way, as it's our time to honor and cherish our mums.
Traditional ways to celebrate Mother's Day in the UK are things like these:
Breakfast in Bed - Breakfast in bed is usually the first thing that a mum gets on Mother's Day in the UK. It's her one day to be pampered and there's nothing like breakfast in bed to start off her day right.
Get Mum Flowers - Either buying or picking flowers for your mum is still really important on Mother's Day. Mother's Day in the UK is the biggest flower buying day of the year, and roses are the number one flower. I used to buy flowers, but sometimes I just picked them for my mum too, as we lived on the outskirts of town with many fields full of wildflowers.
Make Mum a Nice Meal - Unlike Americans, who tend to go out for a meal on Mother's Day, the British often stay at home and members of the family will cook mum a nice meal. Eating out at restaurants is very expensive in the UK, and many families cannot afford it, so a home cooked meal is often the best. It's also the one day in the year where mum can usually expect a day off from cooking, so she's likely to love it no matter what you cook. I used to help my dad cook a meal for my mum. Nothing fancy, often just fish fingers, chips (French fries) and peas, but it was still greatly appreciated by my mum as she could relax instead of cooking the normal Sunday meal.
Buy a Hamper - Hampers are a quintessentially British thing. A hamper is a wicker basket, full of delicious goodies. Chocolates, crackers and cheese, bottles of wine, candy, good coffee, boxes of tea, anything that was a little more expensive than normal so slightly decadent, was included in a hamper. There are now stores all over the UK that will prepare a hamper for you with the things your mum likes the most, then the hamper will be delivered for Mother's Day. I once ordered my grandmother a hamper on Mother's Day, and ordered Stilton Cheese, crackers, a bottle of sherry and some chocolates - because those were the things she liked to eat.
Take Mum for Afternoon Tea - Taking mum for afternoon tea on Mother's Day in the UK is definitely a typical British thing to do. There are many tea shops in the UK and they're usually a lot cheaper than a full meal out. So, taking mum for afternoon tea at a posh tea shop isn't as expensive as taking her for an evening meal, but it's just as lovely. A pot of tea in a china teapot, little sandwiches, cream cakes and scones with fresh cream and strawberry jam - and it's a hit with most mums.
These and many other ideas can help mum celebrate Mother's Day and have a wonderful day. Mother's Day in the UK falls on a Sunday between March 1st and April 4th as it always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is also exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.
